Lead-time choice: faster for a surcharge

Let your customer choose between cheap-and-wait or quick-and-pay. Off by default.

Your customer chooses how fast they want their sign, and pays more or less for it. Off by default — then nothing changes in your flow.

You cannot set this yourself in the portal at the moment. Get in touch with us if you want it set differently.

A starting point: three tiers

Once the lead-time choice is switched on, it starts with these three:

Tier Extra days Surcharge
Budget 10 −5%
Standard 5 0%
Rush 2 +15%

These are not recommended values but a starting point. They should fit your own workshop.

What is set per tier

  • Name — what your customer reads. Without a name of your own, a tidy default name is shown.
  • Extra days — how many working days are added on top of your normal lead time.
  • Surcharge in percent — may be negative (a discount) or positive (a surcharge).

Limits

  • At most 4 tiers. More choice does not make the decision easier.
  • A surcharge between −20% and +50%. Outside that range the value is moved back to the nearest limit.
  • The first tier at 0% is the one selected in advance. So make sure one is at zero, otherwise your customer sits in a surcharge from the very first second.

How the surcharge is calculated

The surcharge applies to the subtotal of the base price plus the ticked extras — not just the bare base price. A 15% rush surcharge on a € 400 sign with a € 15 dimmer is therefore 15% of € 415.

A discount code is only applied after that, over the whole amount. The order is fixed: extras → lead time → discount.

Does this really work?

Yes, and better than most makers expect. Some of your customers are in a hurry — an opening, a birthday, a trade fair — and happily pay a surcharge if it means the sign arrives on time. For you that is work you put at the front of the schedule, with a margin to match.

The budget tier does the opposite: customers who are in no hurry get a reason to order, and you get room in your schedule to fit them in when it suits you.

Do not promise what you cannot meet

The extra days per tier are a promise to your customer. Do not set rush to 2 days if you need 5 in practice: a missed rush delivery costs you more goodwill than the surcharge brings in.
