Paying online through Mollie

Your customer pays straight away and the money goes directly to you. With a test mode to rehearse first.

You will find this in your portal: open your software under My software, go to the Settings tab, open the Payments section and look under Your Mollie account. The heading of that section shows how it stands right now. Only the owner of your company can connect it there. Off by default. Switch it on and your customer can pay for an order straight away — without you needing a webshop.

The money goes directly to you

That is the first thing to know: you connect your own Mollie account. Your customer’s payment goes from their account to your Mollie account and from there to your bank.

We are not in between. We hold no money, take no percentage and are not a party to the transaction. You arrange rates and payouts with Mollie directly.

Connecting, in four steps

  1. Create an account with Mollie (or log in to the one you have).
  2. Fetch your API key there. You get two: one starting with test_ and one starting with live_.
  3. Paste the test key under Mollie API key and choose Connect. We check straight away that it works.
  4. Choose your Payment methods, switch on Show the pay button to your customers and choose Save pay button.

All good? Then replace the test key with your live key.

Test mode — start there

As long as you use a key starting with test_, it says plainly that this is test mode: in your portal and on your customer’s status page (“Test mode — this payment is not real”). No money is taken.

Payment methods

iDEAL is on by default. Tick exactly one method and your customer goes straight to it, which saves them a click. Tick several or none and Mollie shows its own selection screen with everything enabled in your account.

That last one is also the safety net: if a method is ticked in your portal but not enabled at Mollie, Mollie sorts it out.

What your customer sees

The Pay now button sits on your customer’s status page — the same page where they follow the order. You can also choose Create a payment link on an order yourself and send that link to your customer.

Deliberately not in the email itself: there is one place where we check whether anything is still owed, and that is that page. This way an old email can never start a second payment.

The button only appears when everything lines up: payments are on, your Mollie account is connected, nothing has been paid yet, the order is not cancelled and an amount is known.

Where the amount comes from

From the stored order, not from the payment page. Base price plus extras, plus or minus the lead-time adjustment, minus the discount code: exactly what is on their order.

Our server works out the extras, the lead time and the discount code itself when the order comes in. The base price comes from the configurator. So check the price of an order before you send a payment link.

What happens after a successful payment

  • The order moves to Confirmed automatically.
  • The order in your portal shows that it has been paid.

Only a genuinely completed payment counts. A credit card authorisation or a bank transfer still being processed does not count as paid — with both, the money may still fail to arrive. Once it is settled, the order moves along after all.

Pressing pay twice

If your customer goes back and presses “Pay now” again, they end up at the same payment for the next half hour. So there are never two open payments they could accidentally settle both.

The mistake people make

The most common one: leaving the test key in place and thinking you are live. Your customers can “pay”, but no money ever arrives. After switching over, check that your portal no longer says “test mode”.
